Slow Twist

The slow twist mouthpiece is twisted, which means it is not smooth but has edges. The edges of this mouthpiece act on the bars and tongue of the horse, enhancing the impact of the rider's hand and providing control for the rider. The edges ensure that even a slight aid has a greater effect. An single-jointed mouthpiece has one hinge point in the middle. When a rider takes up the reins, pressure is applied to the lips, bars, and sides of the tongue. With additional pressure, the bit slightly squeezes the tongue and exerts pressure on the bars. The bit also puts pressure on the bars and palate because it pivots upwards. Horses with a thick tongue often find this bit comfortable as the pressure on the tongue is relatively low. Horses with a low palate are generally not suited for a single-jointed mouthpiece as the bit may quickly touch the palate.

This bit is specifically suitable for strong horses that like to lean and hang on the bit. Therefore, it is not recommended for horses that are sensitive in the mouth, as they will likely not accept the pressure.

A slow twist mouthpiece is often used in sports by professionals. It is a mouthpiece that should be used with care. A slow twist bit has a relatively strong action, making it suitable only for horses that are strong in the hand. The horse must have a stable foundation before being ridden with a slow twist mouthpiece. At HorseOnline, you can test the bit before purchasing it. A slow twist mouthpiece is FEI-approved and can be used in both show jumping and dressage competitions.
